Kevin's Thoughts on Education
I KNOW I AM LISTENING TO A GREAT PERFORMER WHEN I BECOME LOST IN THEIR MUSICAL EXPRESSION TO THE POINT THAT THEIR INSTRUMENT BECOMES SECONDARY. THIS MUSIC-FIRST GOAL IS THE WAY I APPROACH THE HORN AND HOW I STRUCTURE MY STUDENT'S LEARNING EXPERIENCE.
WITH THE EVER CHANGING SCOPE OF THE MUSICAL WORLD, HAVING THE ABILITY TO THINK CREATIVELY IS KEY. MY STUDENTS LEARN TO BE MUSICAL STORYTELLERS FIRST, AND HORN PLAYERS SECOND. THIS APPROACH TEACHES THE STUDENT TO INFUSE EVERY NOTE THEY PLAY WITH MUSICAL INTENT, AND THROUGH THESE MUSICAL GOALS, CREATE A PLAN TO DEVELOP THE TECHNIQUES A WELL-ROUNDED HORN PLAYER NEEDS TO SUCCEED. THE REASON WE STUDY MUSIC IS TO SHARE IT WITH OTHERS, AND I BELIEVE OUR AUDIENCES WANT TO EXPERIENCE MORE THAN THE NOTES WE SEE ON THE PAGE. THUS IT IS IMPERATIVE TO STRUCTURE OUR LEARNING BASED ON WHAT WE WANT TO COMMUNICATE TO OUR AUDIENCES. IN THIS WAY, EXPRESSIVE MUSICALITY IS DEVELOPED ALONGSIDE A FLUID TECHNICAL FACILITY.
THANKS TO MY VARIED EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND, BOTH AS A STUDENT AND AS A TEACHER, I AM ABLE TO TAILOR MY INSTRUCTIONAL APPROACH TO STUDENTS OF ALL LEVELS. IT IS ALWAYS MY GREATEST PRIORITY TO HELP EACH STUDENT IDENTIFY THEIR GOALS AND GIVE THEM TOOLS TO HELP IN THEIR JOURNEY TO ACHIEVING THEM.
